Storage bags: access or compression?

The first decision is how often you will open the bag. Daily access, seasonal storage and moving house need different kinds of organization. Measure the shelf, bed clearance or storage box before comparing capacities.

Compare the options

Product typeUseful starting pointTrade-off to check
Fabric zip bagItems you retrieve regularlyCheck the outer dimensions, handle construction and cleaning instructions. Do not assume it is waterproof.
Vacuum bagSuitable compressible items stored for longer periodsCheck item care instructions, valve compatibility and the sealing process. Compression does not reduce weight.
Rigid storage boxKeeping a defined shape or organizing stacked itemsCheck stacking limits, lid clearance and whether the box fits through the storage opening.

Check the item care label

Some items may not be suitable for long-term compression or enclosed storage. Follow their care instructions. Put away items only after they are clean and fully dry.

Measure the access opening

A bag may fit under the bed but not pass the bed frame once filled. Measure the narrowest opening and allow room to grip handles. Stated litre capacity is not a substitute for outside dimensions.

Check the closure details

For a vacuum bag, confirm whether a pump is included, required or optional. For a zip bag, look at how far the opening extends and whether you can see the contents without unpacking everything.

Buy for the next retrieval

Label the contents and place the next-needed items where you can reach them. If you need to open a vacuum bag every week, a simpler bag or box may be more convenient.
